 The
garden is behind the main church, just on the
banks of the Dunaj River. There's a small gate
and a staircase that leads down to the garden.
|
| |
In
the garden, we see the whole story of Christianity's
birth played out large scale sculputres and
small-scale figureines housed in small, decorative
cases.
It is almost the same as the pattern of mysteries
in the Catholic Rosary, with some differences.
For example, there's nothing representing third
Sorrowful Mystery, the crown of thorns. (Information
about the Rosary and accompanying mysteries.)
Not all are shown here, but at right is the final
row of cases. |
| |
| Along
the back edge of the garden is the passion
story, beginnning with Jesus' prayer in the
garden and concluding with the crucifixion
basically Gibson's Passion
in statues.
At right, the beating of Jesus. |
| |
 Next,
Jesus carrying the cross. It is here that we
notice for the first time the recurring gesture
Jesus gives with his right hand: forefinger
and middle finger extended, though joined together,
much like the Boy Scouts.
It is interesting to note that Jesus, after the
beating, is now once again regally dressed. |
| |
In
the rear, right corner is the crucifixion scene.
It's interesting to note the difference in
proportion between this sculpture and the previous
regarding the size of the cross.
|
| |
With
the resurrection, seen at right, the large
stone sculptures are replaced with the small
painted wooden carvings.
Notice again the gesture.

|
| |
With
the assention, we find basically the same figure,
with angles added.
And again, the gesture.

|
| |
The
last stop is the Virgin Mary's coronation as
Queen of Heaven.
Many Protestants misunderstand this, combined
with the proclamation of ____ (Mary is the
Mother of God) to mean that Mary is God's wife.
A more correct understanding of the title would
be that Mary is Queen Mother.
